The cabinet industry in Singapore has some recurring practices that homeowners should be aware of before signing any quotation.

1. "Aluminium doors, plywood carcass" — the hybrid bait

This is probably the most common confusion in the market. Some contractors quote “aluminium cabinets” but deliver aluminium-fronted doors on a plywood or particle board carcass. From the front, it looks fully aluminium. But the structural box — the carcass — is still wood, which means it still carries all the moisture and pest risks of wood. Always clarify in writing whether both the carcass and the door system are aluminium.

2. Comparing quotes on different scopes

A $3,800 kitchen quote and a $6,200 kitchen quote for the “same kitchen” are almost never for the same scope. One may include tall units and pull-out systems; the other may not. One may have a premium powder-coat finish; the other has a basic one. Before assuming a contractor is overcharging, ask both to price on identical specifications — same linear footage, same finish system, same hardware brand, same tall unit count.

Plywood boards are bonded with adhesives that typically contain formaldehyde resins.
